ISO 14001 online survey

An internet survey has been launched by ISO to gather feedback about ISO 14001 from small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). ISO aims to use the information to increase the value of EMSs based on ISO 14001 for SMEs. Although the new standard ISO 14001:2004 has only just been published, as Alan Bryden, ISO secretary general points out: 'Improvement is a never-ending cycle'.

Bryden observed: 'SMEs are by far the most numerous in most economies and thus vital to economic wealth and to environmental health.' The survey has been developed and aimed at businesses with fewer than 100 employees to discover how they implement EMSs and their experiences of them. This information will then be used by ISO to make it easier for SMEs to use, implement and benefit from EMSs.

According to Lennart Piper, the leader of the ISO group organizing the survey: 'Whether a company is large or small, in today's global marketplace both its business customers and consumers are increasingly concerned with its environmental performance as well as a competitive price. Investors are also scrutinizing how well companies manage risks - economic, social and environmental... Unfortunately there is a perception that EMSs are too complicated and expensive for small businesses to implement.'
